My journey from a young bride in India to becoming a Dame Commander of the British Empire has been filled with challenges, but it has also been deeply rewarding. I was born in Sitamarhi, Bihar, a small town in India where life was traditional and simple.
I embarked on a new chapter in life when I arrived in the United Kingdom with my husband, Shankar, and our three young children.
I didn’t speak a word of English, and the challenges before me seemed insurmountable. But those very challenges stirred something deep within me; a determination to rise above, to build a new life and to make a difference in the world around me.
In 2006, I took on the role of Principal and CEO of West Nottinghamshire College, a position that would allow me to make a significant impact. During the span of my role as a principal, the college transformed into one of the UK’s leading institutions for vocational education and apprenticeships.
But my efforts haven’t been limited to the confines of a college. I founded the Inspire and Achieve Foundation to support underprivileged youth in Mansfield, a community where I’ve seen firsthand the struggles of poverty and low aspiration. My belief that education can break cycles of despair and open doors to new opportunities has driven everything I do. I’ve dedicated my life to helping others see that they, too, can succeed, no matter where they start.
My work in these areas has taken me to national and international platforms, where I’ve had the privilege of advocating for the power of education to change lives. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to interact with some of the most influential figures in education, politics, and beyond – from Her Majesty The Queen and His Majesty Prince Charles to former Prime Minister David Cameron. These interactions have strengthened my resolve to continue advocating for education as a tool for empowerment and transformation.
Now, I’ve shared my story in my autobiography: a story of struggle, triumph, and the lessons learned along the way. My hope is that as you read my words, you’ll see a reflection of your own journey, and find the inspiration to pursue your dreams with the same courage and determination.
